Congress approves $9.7B measure for Sandy relief

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congress has approved a $9.7 billion measure for Sandy relief aid. The bill provides relief for homeowners and businesses flooded by the storm who filed flood insurance claims.

FEMA had warned that the National Flood Insurance Program will run out of money next week if Congress didn't provide additional borrowing authority to pay out claims. Lawmakers in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut say that money is urgently needed for storm victims awaiting claim checks.

Now that the measure has passed the House, the Senate plans to follow with a likely uncontested vote later today.
