Community holds vigil in honor of woman found dead inside Jersey City park
The Jersey City community came together Friday to remember a woman who was found dead inside of Lincoln Park.
Carolina Cano, 45, was found dead by the lake inside the park early Sunday morning. Authorities have ruled Cano’s death a homicide and are investigating the circumstances around her death.
It is believed that she was killed while she was out jogging inside the park – a fact that has left some people on edge. But those at the vigil say that they need to be strong.
“We’re not going to let fear drive us out of this place that so many of us treasure for our families,” says Jersey City resident Megan Carolan.
Lincoln Park is a popular spot for people to go jogging or to do outdoor activities with their family. Many from the neighborhood surrounding this park brought flowers as they rallied for Cano.
“We may not have known her, but so many can empathize and feel for the family,” says Jersey City Councilwoman Mira Prinz-Arey.
Friends say that Cano was a live-in nanny during the week and lived in Jersey City on weekends. Her housemate says that she never misses hear early weekend morning jogs in Lincoln Park, a block from where she lived.
“She’s coming from the other job and she’s running twice in the park and then she goes to church,” says her housemate, who did not wish to be identified.
Patrols have been increased inside the park. It was unclear if Cano was targeted or if this was a random attack.
Hudson County Freeholder Bill O’Dea says that there are 37 security cameras inside the park. He says that he knows residents are on edge and he will be holding a public meeting next Tuesday to address safety concerns.
“We do a lot. We put a lot of security in here. We usually ramp it up as it gets warmer. Unfortunately, this incident happened before that ramping up occurred,” O’Dea says. “We’ve moved that date up, there are more sheriff officers here.”
No arrests have been made in connection with Cano’s death.
"Please just try and be patient and support each other and understand everyone is working to get a resolution to this crime,” Prinz-Arey says.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Hudson County prosecutor at 201-915-1345.
