(04/24/07) TRENTON (AP) - A Gloucester County police chief and his wife have been charged with stealing money from an organization that helps fight drunken driving.
Frank Winters, the Clayton Borough police chief, and his wife Bernice Winters, are both charged with stealing $150,000 from the organization Mothers Against Drunk Driving, Attorney General Stuart Rabner announced Tuesday. "The alleged scheme is shocking on a number of levels," Rabner said. The couple owned a company that was paid to create promotional material for MADD, but they never did, Rabner said. Both Frank Winters, who is also a councilman in Newfield, and his wife each face one charge each of conspiracy and theft by deception. The Gloucester County prosecutor, Sean Dalton, is currently taking over day-to-day operations of the police department.
