Gov. Chris Christie (R-N.J.) is looking to make history with his state Supreme Court picks.

The governor announced two nominations to the court, one to fill a current vacancy and another that will open up March 1. If approved, Chatham Borough Mayor Bruce Harris and Assistant Attorney General Phil Kwon will be the newest members of New Jersey's state Supreme Court.

As Christie explained at a news conference, "Bruce will join a historic group of justices across the country as the seventh openly gay state Supreme Court justice if he's confirmed." He also stated, "Phil will be the first immigrant and the first Asian-American to sit on the state Supreme Court if he's confirmed." Joined by their families at the news conference, neither man would take questions on what Gov. Christie called their historic nominations.

The two vacancies in the court are from Justice Virginia Long, who faces a mandatory retirement, and African-American Justice John Wallace, whom Gov. Christie decided not to reappoint.
