Summers in Asbury Park are now two months longer when it comes to parking rates, as changes are coming to the town’s paid parking system.
New this year in the town is just two parking seasons – peak and off peak, which means the rates will only change twice a year.
Peak season will now last from April 15 through Oct. 15, while off-peak runs from Oct. 16 through April 14.
Rates vary from 50-cents an hour through $2 an hour, depending on which of the three zones you’re parking in.
Weekends, from Friday evenings through 2 a.m. Mondays, will cost $2 an hour to park during peak season, regardless of where you are in the city.
Construction could start as soon as this summer on a new parking garage that will be home to about 500 spaces.
The design for the $15 million parking garage comes from the firm TimHaahs, whose past endeavors include modern train stations and a new garage at Yankee Stadium.
According to Michael Manzella, the city's director of transportation, construction will begin once the final design is chosen. The goal, Manzella says, is to start construction this summer and open the garage by the start of summer 2021.
