A New Jersey candymaker is doing her part to make sure that this Mother’s Day is extra special for COVID-19 front-line workers.
Jennifer Star owns Sweet Gifts by Star. She is making gift baskets to bring to the staff at Overlook Medical Center on Monday’s Day this Sunday as a show to gratitude.
“The goal here is to make sure that every single mom who’s a doctor or nurse working the front line that is going to be working on Monday’s Day this Sunday receives a gift,” Star says. “We are expecting at least 300 moms to be working the front line just at Overlook.”
Star’s daughter Sophie was born at Overlook Medical Center. Sophie is helping to put the gifts together. Star says that she will also deliver adult coloring books to the new mothers at the hospital.

There are other volunteers getting in on the effort. Jersey City resident McKenna Velazquez contributed homemade earrings.
“If they could be like a treat to somebody who has really sacrificed so much during this time and put their life on the line to help and protect others, then that’s like an amazing place for them to go,” she says.
Local companies including Surg-Assist, Lawrence Law, the Bachrach Group and Jerry Rotunno and Tony Monteiro of the Committed Pig Restaurant Group have donated as well.
“I wasn’t surprised at the generosity because I think that New Jersey is just a special place,” she says. “Not only are we strong and proud and eager to support but always taking care of our own,” she says.
More information about how to donate can be found on the GoFundMe page.
