Calls for Route 9 changes after children struck
There are calls to address a dangerous road in Lakewood following an accident that left a mother and her two young children injured.
The accident happened Monday night. Police say a 27-year-old woman was pushing her children, ages 4 and 1, in a carriage across the intersection of Route 9 and Edgewood Court at around 10 p.m. when they were struck by a Lincoln Towncar.
Authorities say the woman suffered a facial laceration, while the children both sustained serious head injuries and are listed in critical condition.
Residents in town have been calling on officials to address the dangers of Route 9. Lakewood resident Ari Berkowitz has started a grassroots campaign to draw attention to the cause.
"Our message is to the state to take a look and see what's going on," he says. "Something needs to be done."
Berkowitz says a study is now underway to look at ways to make Route 9 safer. The campaign would like to see the highway widened.
"We got the effort together and approached homeowners and asked 'Would you give up a piece of your property so they can improve the roadway?'," Berkowitz says.
Berkowitz also says that Lakewood's growing population means more accidents like this will occur.
Lakewood police say they will not charge the driver of the Lincoln Towncar that hit the family.
