A school bus full of students who were returning from a trip to an amusement park overturned on the New Jersey Turnpike.

New Jersey State Police say that the crash happened around 4 p.m. in the northbound lanes near Interchange 13 and the Goethals Bridge. Police say that four students and an adult were taken to the hospital following the crash, but they say that their injuries did not appear to be serious. 

The students were from the Mevakshei Hashem School in Brooklyn. They spent the day at an amusement park in New Jersey and were on their way back to New York when the crash happened.

Students were forced to climb out of the emergency exists. Children on the bus tell News 12 that they were helping each other out. Many were not wearing seat belts at the time, according to at least one student.

A portion of the Turnpike was closed for a few hours while crews cleared the crash, leading to heavy traffic around the evening rush hour.

The cause of the crash was not immediately known.

The incident comes three weeks after another school bus overturned on Interstate 80 in Mount Olive when it was struck by a dump truck. Two people were killed and dozens were injured in that crash. The driver in that crash is now facing vehicular homicide charges.
