Late-night parties in at least two New Jersey towns are keeping some Staten Island residents awake.
Staten Island officials say the parties are happening in Perth Amboy and Elizabeth.
Some who live in an adult community in Staten Island’s Charleston neighborhood say that they have been hearing bass-laden music coming from across the Arthur Kill, which separates New Jersey and Staten Island.
“What you really hear is that bass. That pounding. And you do hear music,” says Joanne LoPorcaro.
She says that the sounds are keeping her up at night.
“It was good for a while, but when I noticed about a couple weeks ago, it started up again,” she says. “You hear it. It’s late at night. It’s usually around 11 p.m., 11:30 p.m.”
Several other residents of the Tides at Charleston in Staten Island tell News 12 New Jersey they've been bothered by loud music as well. These have become known as "boom parties."
Perth Amboy officials say that police have been called to an area in the 1000 block of High Street four times between Aug. 31 and Sept. 14 in the late night to early morning hours. The area has warehouses, many of which have mostly empty parking lots. Perth Amboy police issued summonses for both noise and motor vehicle violations on the first three calls. On the fourth call, police found no one there. The city says police haven't been called since.
LoPorcaro says one of her neighbors has spoken up to local officials.
“She had sent around a letter – we can’t take this anymore. They’re right there and they hear it the loudest,” LoPorcaro says. “It has to stop. It’s not right.”
Perth Amboy officials say it wasn’t immediately clear if the calls to police were coming from the New Jersey or New York side.
The Staten Island district attorney tweeted last month calling on Elizabeth officials to stop the noise. Perth Amboy officials say that to their knowledge, no one from Staten Island has reached out.
