Bones found at former home of convicted serial killer Richard Biegenwald
The discovery of bones found on the former property of a convicted serial killer prompted a police response in Asbury Park Wednesday afternoon.
Police were called to 507 Sixth Ave. around 11 a.m. when contractors working on the home apparently found bones underneath the porch. The house was once the home of known serial killer Richard Biegenwald.
"I looked at the bones, and it looked like human bones to me," says current tenant Tim Smith. "They were doing deckwork and the contractors found that."
A spokesman for the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office says the bones are most likely animal remains, but they are being tested by the medical examiner.
Biegenwald was linked to seven murders in New Jersey in the 1970s and early-1980s. He was arrested at the Sixth Avenue home in 1983.
Biegenwald was originally sentenced to death, but that was overturned when New Jersey did away with capital punishment. He died in prison in 2008.
