Councilman Fernando Cabrera and members of the Bodegueros Association are calling for more protection for bodega owners after a string of attacks in the Bronx.

They are asking for the city to install robbery alert buttons in every bodega, more funding for the youth and a greater NYPD presence.

Wascar Querrero, the owner of Alan's Deli Grocery in Highbridge, told News 12 that he fears for his life. He says a group of what appeared to be teens came to his bodega on Oct. 3 in an effort to remove a wanted picture that was posted on the door.

Querrero says the group threw a bottle at him and ended up cracking his door. He says it took police 20-30 minutes to arrive, even after he pushed a robbery alert button installed in his store.

News 12 reached out to the NYPD about Querrero’s response time claim. It said it is working to answer to that question.
