Former Vice President Joe Biden visited the Garden State Sunday to campaign for Democratic gubernatorial candidate Phil Murphy.

Biden and Murphy were met by a large crowd of supporters at the Lyndhurst Recreation Center. 

The "Get Out the Vote" rally marked the first time Biden has stumped for Murphy, who served under President Barack Obama as ambassador to Germany and is a former executive at Goldman Sachs. 

Both men talked about the importance of reaching out to working-class families and raising the minimum wage. They were also critical of Gov. Chris Christie, and President Donald Trump's polices and leadership.

Biden called the New Jersey race "the most important in the country."

The former vice president was also slated to headline a private fundraiser Sunday for Murphy's campaign in Bergen County.  

Murphy is leading the pack in the Democrats' June 6 primary and has a huge campaign cash advantage over his three leading rivals as he bids to succeed Republican Gov. Chris Christie.

He has loaned his campaign more than $15 million and has spent about six times more than his rivals combined.

The primary will be held on June 6.
