Bergen Co. cop recovers after losing leg in crash
A Bergen County police officer is recovering Friday after losing part of his leg in a motorcycle accident.
The incident occurred on Route 9W in Palisades, New York. Investigators say Bergen County Police Sgt. Bill Koretsky was leading a funeral procession for a fellow officer?s son when something went wrong.
?It appears that coming down the hill, around the bend ? the Bergen County police officer had a problem controlling the motorcycle,? Orangetown Police Det. Lt. John McAndrew says.
Police are still investigating the exact problem apparently encountered by Sgt. Koretsky.
Bergen County Police Sgt. Kevin Hartnett says the impact caused severe damage to Sgt. Koretsky?s left leg. Doctors at Westchester Medical Center were forced to amputate.
Police officers say this isn?t the first time Sgt. Koretsky has been in an accident on the job. In May 2006, his police cruiser crashed into a telephone pole in Teaneck during a high-speed chase.
Fellow police officers say Sgt. Koretsky returned to work after his last accident. They hope, in time, Sgt. Koretsky will recover and return to work again.
Two other officers, Creskill Police Sgt. Bert Looby and Ridgefield Officer Ian Shaw, were also injured in the motorcycle accident. They were treated at Nyack Hospital and released.
