Swimmers at the Jersey Shore say that they are happy Hurricane Gert is moving further away from the shoreline after the storm caused rough ocean conditions.
The storm caused rip currents to form, which made swimming difficult. Manasquan lifeguards said that 14 people had to be rescued Wednesday.
Jennifer Freeman tells News 12 New Jersey that she brought her four children to the shore for a mini vacation, but they were unable to swim Wednesday because of the rough conditions.
“We decided to pack up our bags and head to Point Pleasant Beach, to my friend’s beach house, and we just stayed by the pool yesterday,” she says.
Manasquan beach manager Wally Wall says that the waves were around 8 or 9 feet high by 11 a.m. Wednesday. The town closed most of the beaches as a precaution.
Lifeguards say that they were put to the test Wednesday while making rescues.
“You try and stay calm,” says lifeguard Tim Farrell. “The calmer you are, the calmer the victim is, so that goes a long way.
Conditions were much-improved Thursday, but swimmers say that they still were careful.
Swimmers are always advised to only swim when lifeguards are on duty.
