Barnegat to get state's first 'green' house
Construction is under way on New Jersey's first completely "green" house. The home is being built by Red Bank-based builder K. Hovnanian with recycled materials and energy-efficient heating systems.

Construction is under way on New Jersey's first completely "green" house.
The home is being built by Red Bank-based builder K. Hovnanian with recycled materials and energy-efficient heating systems. "It's extremely cutting edge," says K. Hovnanian's David Cohen.
Old soda bottles provide the material used in the home's carpets, and countertops will be built out of recycled glass. Recycled newspapers will provide the building's insulation.
"It's environmentally friendly," says Cohen. "No maintenance, it's attractive ? it's a win-win-win for the homeowner."
The home will be occupied by Nadine and Gary Calantropia upon completion. The couple expects to save about a third of their utility bills due to the environmentally friendly house.
"Money is so tight already," says Nadine Calantropia. "You have to work so hard for your money. Why spend it on utilities?"
K. Hovnanian hopes to add solar panels to future projects for even more energy- and money-efficient homes.
