The owner of a bait shop at the Jersey Shore has created a calendar of the various cars that became stuck after illegally driving out onto the beach.
Andy Grossman owns Riptide Bait and Tackle Shop in Brigantine and runs a beach tow membership for 4x4 owners in case they break down on the beach.
“There’s nothing better than driving on this beach,” says Grossman.
But Grossman says that about a dozen or so times a year he comes across people making the foolish and illegal decision to drive a car on the beach, only to get stuck in the sand. Grossman says he would always make the same joke.
“I kept saying, ‘There's one for the calendar,’ as if we were going to really do it,” he says.
But for 2020 Grossman’s joke about a calendar will become a reality. The Beached Cars of Brigantine calendar features 12 months of photos that Grossman and his colleague have taken of people who have ignored the rules and driven out on to the beach.
“Every entrance and exit has all kinds of signs, ‘Do not, do not, do not’ and even a regular truck can't go on without four-wheel drive,” he says.
About 300 calendars have been sold so far – enough to present a check worth $2,500 to True Spirit Coalition – a charity that helps feed local families I need.
“I keep ordering more because they keep selling out,” Grossman says.
All the proceeds from the calendars go to charity. They cost $20 for a smaller version and $25 for a larger one. Anyone who wants to buy a calendar can call Riptide Bait and Tackle Shop at 609-264-0440.
