Baby recovering after being struck by baseball
An 11-month-old baby boy is recovering at the hospital after he was hit in the face by a foul ball at a Sussex County Miners baseball game.
The incident happened Wednesday night about 30 minutes after the game started. Officials say the baby was inside a stroller and was hit by a line-drive foul ball. The child was airlifted to the hospital, according to officials.
"It's an unfortunate mishap and we're just trying to make sure the patient is getting the best possible care they can, and our thoughts and prayers are going out to the family,” says Skylands Stadium Director of Operations Shane White.
Protective netting is up behind home plate from dugout to dugout. But White says that unless they cover the entire field in netting, it is impossible to protect everyone.
"We do have the appropriate and legal netting up for the league's standards.  It's the same way at every baseball stadium,” White says. “You have to try and be as alert as you can with foul balls.  One thing we pride ourselves here is the staff and the fans are actually very good about it."
The New York Mets recently agreed to extend netting at Citi Field to the far ends along each baseline.
The baby, who was not identified, is said to be in stable condition.
