Automated checkpoint security lanes debuted Tuesday at Newark Liberty International Airport's Terminal C, ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday.

This initiative by United Airlines and the Transportation Security Administration is supposed to decrease security line wait time by up to 30 percent, according to officials.

Delta Airlines first rolled out the new system at the Atlanta-Hartsfield Airport last May. The automated system includes an improved conveyor belt that allows five passengers to fill bins simultaneously. 

The bins will also be larger so passengers won't need as many to send their belongings down the conveyor belt. Bins will also be automatically returned to the queue, and bags with potential threats will be directed to a separate area for further inspection.

Terminal C will have 17 automated lanes for travelers to use. Two of those 17 lanes opened Tuesday.

According to Airlines for America, 27.3 million passengers will travel globally on U.S. airlines during the Thanksgiving travel period, up 2.5 percent from last year.
