Police departments around New Jersey are warning the public to be aware of potential scams that may prey on people’s fears about the coronavirus.

Officials say that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention do not currently have any representatives on the ground in New Jersey who would be going door to door asking the public for information. Anyone who shows up at a home claiming to be from the CDC is most likely not who they are claiming to be.

Officials say that other potential scams include phishing schemes, where the public is sent fraudulent links in a play to steal personal information such as email addresses or passwords.

Anyone who suspects that they may have been the victim or potential mark for fraud is urged to contact their local police department.
