The New Jersey Department of Homeland Security and Preparedness says that a text message circulating stating that Antifa/rioters are targeting supporters of the police and President Donald Trump are false.
The department says that the bogus text began circulating social media around May 31. The message states that a Monroe police officer told a close family friend that rioters are planning to go into neighborhoods to look for American flags or police supporter flags and attack these homes.
Homeland Security officials say that Monroe Township police investigated these threats and found them to be unsubstantiated.
“In the wake of widespread protests nationwide and as some towns impose a curfew, several versions of the text…have circulated around the country with different cities inserted in the message,” NJOHSP said in a statement. “These messages are likely being created to stoke fear from existing protests and promote further discord in communities where peaceful gatherings may occur.”
The department says that the public should be wary of information and messages they find online and should only use legitimate and credible organizations for accurate information.
“Rumors can easily circulate within communities during a crisis and the spread of disinformation can be stopped by choosing trusted sources of information,” NJOHSP stated.

Another message referencing Antifa began circulating the internet on Sunday. The tweet from an account @ANTIFA_US stated that members of the group would be moving into residential areas to attack residents. Twitter stated on Monday that the fake account was actually created by a white supremacist group. The account has since been suspended.
Short for “anti-fascists,” Antifa is not a single organization but rather an umbrella term for far left-leaning militant groups that confront or resist neo-Nazis and white supremacists at demonstrations.
People associated with Antifa have been present for significant demonstrations and counter-demonstrations over the last three years, sometimes involving brawls and property damage.
President Donald Trump and members of his administration have singled out Antifa as being responsible for the violence at protests triggered by the killing of George Floyd, a black man who died after a white Minneapolis police officer pressed his knee into his neck for several minutes even after Floyd stopped moving and pleading for air.
Trump tweeted Sunday, “The United States of America will be designating ANTIFA as a Terrorist Organization."
