Authorities announce charges for teen shot by police
Authorities have announced charges against a teen who was shot and injured by police in Trenton.
The state attorney general's office announced that the 14-year-old was charged with unlawful possession of a handgun, aggravated assault and possession of a defaced firearm.
Authorities say witnesses told police that Radazz Hearns had a gun in his hand and was shot and wounded while being pursued by police.
However, family members claim Hearns was not armed during the Aug. 7 incident near Calhoun Street in Trenton.
The attorney general's office says a .22-caliber handgun was recovered at the scene a day later. Officials say a police vehicle drove over the gun during the incident and remained at the scene through the night to provide lighting. An individual reported the gun to authorities shortly after the emergency vehicle left the scene.
Authorities say a Mercer County sheriff's officer and two state police troopers were responding to reports of shots fired when they saw three males walking in the area. When the officers went to question them, authorities say the 14-year-old ran off and was pursued by the sheriff's officer and one of the troopers.
The other trooper remained at the scene with the two other males.
Authorities say both officers fired at Hearns, striking him in the legs and the buttocks.
He was taken to Capital Health Regional Medical Center and released a week later.
