Attorney Liza Milgrim is ready to step into her new role as president of the Long Island Hispanic Bar Association.
Milgrim is a personal injury attorney whose clients are mostly Spanish speaking. Many of them have been in construction accidents or suffered other serious injuries.
"I think the reason I love it so much is because there is such a need with the Spanish community," says Milgrim. "So many Hispanics live here on Long Island."
Milgrim, who works at Sullivan and Papain, is the incoming president of the Long Island Hispanic Bar Association, an organization she has been a part of for about five years. She was the first Hispanic partner at Sullivan and Papain.
"The mission of our organization is to foster and promote the advancement of Hispanic attorneys on Long Island as well as our community," says Milgrim. "So with respect to our community we provide a legal information program where we're able to disseminate accurate, free legal information."
The Merrick mother of two says what brought her to this profession is her mother who emigrated from Ecuador in the 1960s. Milgrim says she had to help her mom often with phone calls because she struggled with the English language.
A big part of what drives Milgrim is helping those in need. Milgrim says she is heavily involved with the community outreach part of the association, spearheading a coat drive and a prom dress drive.
