Leaf-eating gypsy moths have taken over the trees in some Monmouth County neighborhoods.
Many Howell residents say they?ve had enough of the caterpillars and moths. Homeowner Laura Cross said, ?[Last year,] everything was just covered in caterpillars. [They were] crawling everywhere?the tables, the patio, the grill, our house, the windows.? Cross adds that the caterpillars devoured most of the 19 trees on her property, leaving her shaded backyard mostly sunny.
Another homeowner, Dan Ecks, says the situation only gets worse once the caterpillars mature. ?When they turn into moths, it?s ridiculous. You are swarmed by at least 200,? Ecks said.
Monmouth County is taking action against the moths. The infested area is scheduled to be sprayed on May 1. Many residents say the spraying can?t come soon enough.
