Assistant DA: Linden cop in Staten Island wrong-way crash had BAC of .24
The off-duty police officer involved in a wrong-way crash that killed a Linden police officer and a friend had a blood-alcohol level three times the legal limit, according to the Richmond County Assistant District Attorney Daniel Master.
Officials say 27-year-old Pedro Abad had a blood alcohol content (BAC) of .24 percent following the March 20 crash. The legal limit is .08.
Abad was driving when he collided head-on with a tractor-trailer on the West Shore Expressway (Route 440) near Arthur Kill Road.
Authorities have not yet said if Abad would be charged in connection to the crash.
Abad previously had his driver's license suspended in 2013 for driving under the influence. He was also issued summonses for DUI and careless driving in 2011 after jumping a curb and slamming into the side of the New Way Supermarket in Roselle. The charges were later dismissed, according to court documents obtained by News 12 New Jersey. However, the documents did not give a reason for the dismissal.
News 12 New Jersey has also learned Abad has been involved in eight motor vehicle crashes since 2005.
The Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office is investigating the incident.
