New Jersey officials are seeking emergency funding from the federal government to fix beach erosion at the Jersey Shore – funding that is likely not to be approved.
Two recent winter storms have taken large chunks out of some popular beaches in New Jersey, and several more storms are on the way. But money to fix the erosion is not likely to materialize.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says a recent nor’easter doesn’t appear likely to qualify as the sort of “extraordinary storm event” necessary to free up emergency reconstruction aid.
The nor’easter that dropped more than 30 inches of snow in New Jersey also created huge cliffs with 20-foot drop-offs in Bay Head, Ortley Beach and several other beach towns.
As many as three additional storms are expected to hit the state in the coming week.
