Calling it an “evolving situation,’ Bergen County Executive Jim Tedesco announced new efforts to help reduce coronavirus exposure in the county.
Tedesco confirmed new cases of COVID-19 in the county on Monday, bringing the total number of cases countywide to 61. There were 178 cases statewide as of Monday evening.

“Unfortunately, this is still merely the beginning,” Tedesco said.
All malls in the county will be forced to close at 11 p.m. Tuesday. Tedesco said that there will be a curfew in the county from 8 p.m. until 7 a.m. until further notice.

County parks will remain open, but “only for passive recreation in groups no bigger than four individuals.”
Gov. Phil Murphy already announced Monday afternoon that all non-essential businesses would be forced to close by Monday evening, including businesses such as gyms, health clubs and movie theaters. All restaurants in the state may not offer dine-in service – delivery or takeout only. Restaurants must also close by 8 p.m., regardless if they are typically open 24 hours.
Murphy also stated that no public gatherings of 50 or more people will be allowed.
Tedesco also said that Bergen Community College will soon be hosting drive-thru coronavirus testing. He said that it is expected to be up and running by the end of the week. Bergen County is working with Hudson and Essex counties to set up similar testing facilities as well.
Officials called on those in the medical community – including those who may be retired or want to volunteers – to help out with the testing. This would also include medical or nursing students.
