Amazon Prime members may soon be able to have their packages delivered right to their vehicles.
Amazon Key In-Car delivery would allow Amazon delivery drivers to place customers’ packages in the trunks of their vehicles in order to keep them safe. The system uses the vehicle’s internet connection to remotely open the customer’s car.
The service is currently available to Chevy, GMC and Cadillac vehicles with an On Star account, as well as Volvos with On Call. All models must be 2015 or newer.
New Jersey resident Matt Gergasko says that he likes the idea. He says that packages have often been stolen off of his porch.
“Nothing has been safe on our porch,” he says. “Even when I knew it was there, I’d go down, sometimes it was there. Sometimes it wasn’t.”
But the idea of letting a delivery driver into her personal car was not appealing for Newark resident Chidinma Emenike.
“I don’t trust that. I don’t trust that at all,” she says. “I can’t allow that to happen.”
The service is only available in the Newark area in New Jersey for the time being, but Amazon says that it plans to expand. The service is also available in 37 other cities across the country.
Users can track their delivery in real time. Vehicles must be parked in publicly accessible areas.
