An unusual, albeit brief, catch will make one vacation to the Jersey Shore truly memorable for a man from Middletown, New York.
Jesse Vavricka?s fishing line hooked a 6-foot, 150-pound bull shark Wednesday morning off a Beach Haven jetty in Long Beach Island.
?I?ll tell you, it kind of caught me off guard,? Vavricka said. ?I didn?t know I had a shark at the beginning until he lifted out of the water.?
Vavricka said he fought the shark, who took all of his fishing line, for 35 minutes. He said in the end, the people with him were afraid to grab the shark, so it eventually swam back into the ocean.
According to Vavricka, he found out from residents that a lot of sharks live in the waters in Beach Haven. Fishermen say sharks usually come close to the shore in the warmer waters to feed. Vavricka said the bull shark he caught was only 30 to 40 yards offshore.
