Alumni of Jersey City’s famed St. Anthony’s High School gathered Wednesday to say goodbye as the school is set to close its doors for good.
St. Anthony's announced in April that the 2017 school year would be its last. The school was forced to close due to lack of funding and low enrollment.
Alumni of the school attended the event to reminisce and see old friends.
“Everybody knows St. Anthony's for basketball but it's truly a family,” says former student Doug Reed. “The people that go through these halls, inside these walls, they're incredible people. All of them.”
Dozens of pieces of St. Anthony’s memorabilia was on display inside the school for alumni to take, including yearbooks stretching back decades and rows of trophies to chronicle one of the best high school basketball programs in the country.
“To see the school brings back such memories, but it's sad,” says Bill Skowronski, class of 1963. “It's really sad that they have to close their doors.”
Current students are going to get their transcripts and other academic materials from St. Anthony's on Thursday.
School officials said they would help current students find alternate Catholic schools to attend.
