Alec Baldwin says he fell for a "scam" Statue of Liberty tour – one that made him and his family end up in “F***ING JERSEY.”
The actor shared his experience on Instagram Sunday. He says that he and his wife, Hilaria, "Two sharp, savvy NYers," bought $40 tickets for themselves and their children for a boat tour of the Statue of Liberty and were escorted to a shuttle bus to New Jersey.
“We paid. Then we read the tickets. NO ON EVER MENTIONED NEW F***ING JERSEY!!! This is a scam,” Baldwin wrote in the post.
A picture of the tickets that accompanied the post shows that the tour departs from Liberty Park.
Baldwin says his family ultimately ended up taking the Staten Island Ferry, which is free and passes the Statue of Liberty.
Baldwin is apparently not the only New Yorker who felt cheated by having to leave Manhattan to go to New Jersey, of all places. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said Tuesday that city agencies including the police, the Department of Transportation and the Economic Development Corporation are joining forces to crack down on unlicensed and misleading Statue of Liberty tour operators
"The Statue of Liberty is an enduring symbol of the promise of the American Dream," said de Blasio. "Tourists and visitors have been taken for a ride, and it's unacceptable. We won't let up until illegal and deceitful practices are a thing of the past."
De Blasio says that the city would send cease-and-desist letters to two companies believed to be operating non-permitted buses in the area of downtown Manhattan where the boats to Liberty Island launch.
The Associated Press wire services contributed to this report.
