Acting education chief backs suspension of Wayne Hills students
New Jersey's Acting Education Commissioner Chris Cerf has sided with a state judge's decision to bench nine Wayne Hills High School football players accused of beating up two rival players in October at an off-campus party.
Those nine players will not be able to participate in tomorrow's state championship game. Attorneys of the nine players requested that the suspensions be lifted, claiming that their clients were punished without due process.
The attorney for Andrew Monaghan, the only football player whose name was revealed because he's of legal age, said this incident was blown up by the Wayne Police Department.
"High school kids fight all the time," said Kalman Giest. "And despite the way this was blown up by the Wayne Police Department this was not, I repeat, this was not nine football players ganging up on two wimps."
Tomorrow's game is a rematch between Wayne Hills and Old Tappan and will take place at MetLife Stadium.
