A number of beach towns
along the Jersey Shore that have spoken with News 12 say they
are ready for the summer, although there’s a national lifeguard shortage.
“We have chief meetings all
the time for Jersey Shore lifeguards’ chiefs and we discuss these things and prepare
for the future in case that does happen, and all the chief said the same
things that you did - that they’re very well-staffed this
summer,” says Harry Harsin, the Belmar chief lifeguard.
As the unofficial start of
summer quickly approaches, Belmar is ready to cover its large beach with
about 100 lifeguards.
“Every stand will be up and
covered between Memorial Day and Labor Day will have full coverage,” says
Harsin.
On Long Beach Island, Harvey
Cedars Police Chief Robert Burnaford says their chief lifeguard recruits all
winter long
“I couldn’t imagine having a
shortage because were just anticipating a very busy summer and being populated
so here in Long Beach Island, I can say we’re very fortunate to be able to take
care of all the visitors here,” says Burnaford.
Asbury Park officials say
they are ready to go with lifeguards as well, saying
they are still looking for employees in hospitality, but
all set on the beach.
The hot weather lately may
take many to the beach to beat the heat along the shore, including Belmar. But
swimmers should enter the water with caution, as lifeguards are not yet on
duty.
