9 children, several adults injured in bus crash
Authorities say several children and four adults were injured after a school bus and a car collided, and crashed into a building in Irvington.
Nine special needs students, ages 10 to 16, the bus driver, two aides, and the driver of the other car were taken to University Hospital and Beth Israel Hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries. The accident happened on Springfield Avenue at around 8:15 a.m.
From surveillance video of the crash, it appears that the bus wasn't able to stop when it crashed into the car. The front of the bus was so badly damaged that the children had to evacuate through the rear emergency exit.
The children were treated for lacerations, bleeding and some possible broken bones.
A spokeswoman for the mayor of Irvington says officials are investigating if a mechanical failure is to blame for the crash.
The Irvington School Board contracts a bus company through Horizon Link, based out of Bloomfield. A spokesperson for the district released a statement saying, "The district is committed to providing all necessary resources to the families, in particular counseling services... All of our energy and effort will be dedicated to assisting the families in any manner necessary."
The bus was on its way to Mt. Carmel Guild school in West Orange at the time of the accident.
