On the 75 anniversary of D-Day, there are people still with us living in New Jersey who witnessed it firsthand – including a man from Union who is telling his incredible story.
Ninety-four Navy Veteran Dan Sullivan, often referred to by loved one's as "D-Day Dan," served on the Battleship Texas during D-Day.
"D-Day Dan" not only made it through the historic wartime event, but about 10 days later, was on the Battleship Texas when a 1,000-pound German shell came crashing through the side of the Battleship.
The shell rolled around in an officer's stateroom and fortunately never exploded.
Dan remembers clearly where he was on the battleship 75 years ago today.
"At Omaha Beach, and we're shelling the guys trying to climb the cliffs and helping them out trying to knock that down,” says Dan. “We finally did and we stayed there. I don't know how many days until they got up and did take it."
Dan not only survived all of that, but was later sent to both Iwo Jima and Okinawa, Japan on the Texas.
He survived Japanese Kamikaze pilots there.
