40 German shepherds rescued from basement of Ridgefield Park Animal Hospital
RIDGEFIELD PARK - The Bergen County SPCA rescued dozens of German shepherds from the Ridgefield Park Animal Hospital and many are now wondering if the hospital was running a puppy mill.
The SPCA raided the hospital on Main Street after receiving a complaint from a neighbor. Many dogs were found crammed in cages in the hospital's basement, with multiple dogs in crates meant for one animal. A few others were found out back.
The Bergen County Department of Health Services says 11 of the dogs were returned to their owners. The remaining 29 were put in a mobile vet clinic and taken to Bergen County's Animal Shelter and Adoption Center in Teterboro, where they were evaluated.
Neighbor Tatiana Alexis says she asked the hospital if it was running a puppy mill and was told it wasn't. Multiple litters of puppies were found in the hospital's basement.
Requests for comment from the Ridgefield Park Animal Hospital went unanswered.
