A four-hour standoff between police and a robbery suspect in Newark ended peacefully Wednesday evening.
Police say the incident began when two officers tried to arrest David J. Franklin during a robbery attempt in Lincoln Park. According to authorities, Franklin opened fire on the officers and fled on foot. Franklin then barricaded himself in an apartment building on Thomas Street.
Authorities closed off surrounding streets and locked down the nearby Lady Liberty Charter School as a result of the standoff. Some parents, however, were able to pick their children up from school early.
Police say no shots were fired during the standoff or the apprehension of Franklin. It is still unclear if Franklin held any hostages during the standoff.
Police Director Garry McCarthy describes the suspect as a violent criminal who just got out of a jail for a previous shooting. McCarthy also says Franklin had served ten years in jail and at one point escaped custody.
?I would hope that we?re not gonna see this guy again,? says McCarthy. ?This is the type of guy that we really need off the streets.?
No one was injured during the incident.
