3 dead, 3 hurt in Newark stabbing rampage; person of interest sought
Three people are dead, including two children, and three others were hurt in a stabbing rampage at a Newark home Saturday. Authorities are looking for a person of interest in the case.
The stabbing happened at the home located at 137 Hedden Terrace. Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn Murray says the deceased victims are 8-year-old Aerial Little Whitehurst and 11-year-old Al-Jahon Whitehurst, of Newark, and 23-year-old Syasia McBurroughs, of Cedar Knolls.
McBurroughs was pronounced dead at the scene, and the two other victims were pronounced dead a short time later at the hospital. Both of the children had attended the nearby the George Washington Carver School.
Those injured include a 29-year-old woman, a 13-year-old boy and a 13-year-old girl. They were taken to the hospital, where they are in critical but stable condition.
Murray says many of the victims are family members. Police have not released the identity of those injured.
Authorities say the crime does not appear to be a random act. They believe the suspect had a pre-existing relationship with one of the victims in the home, but did not live there himself.
Police responded to the home after a 911 call was made around 3:30 p.m. Authorities would not say who dialed 911.
Murray says a person of interest named Jeremy Arrington is being sought for questioning in the case.
Authorities say the 26-year-old is also wanted for shooting and sexually assaulting a woman on Oct. 9 in the Clinton Hill section of Newark. That victim was treated for injuries that are not considered life-threatening.
Police say Arrington should be considered armed and dangerous.
A $20,000 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest in the case. Murray is urging anyone with information about the incident to call 877-847-7432.
