LEONIA - A wheelchair was stolen from a special needs child in Leonia on Thursday.

Police say that the wheelchair belongs to a 14-year-old with cerebral palsy.

The wheelchair costs $12,000 but is worth a lot more to the child.

"Basically, this is his legs," said Leonia Police Department Chief, Thomas Rowe. "It gets him to school, things that make him happy."

The boy's mother briefly left the wheelchair sitting outside the front door of an apartment building as she helped her son inside.

Surveillance video then showed the suspects spot the chair and walk into the lobby to look around. Then one suspects jumped on the wheelchair and took off.

The police chief is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the recovery of the wheelchair and the arrest of the two suspects.

Police are also supporting a Go-Fund-Me page to raise money to buy the child a replacement wheelchair if it is not found.
