150 NJ state troopers deployed to Baltimore
Over 100 of New Jersey's state troopers have headed down to Baltimore Tuesday evening, a deployment ordered by Gov. Chris Christie following a night of violence and mayhem in Maryland's largest city.
The deployment will include 150 state police personnel, 100 troopers and 50 other enlisted and civilian staff.
Rioting, looting and arson fires shook Baltimore Monday night, just hours after the funeral of Freddie Gray, a black man who died while in police custody. Maryland's Gov. Larry Hogan sent in the National Guard to help quell the violence.
The New Jersey team will be on the ground for at least 72 hours at the request of the state of Maryland.
"They're going down there to protect life and protect property and to ensure that the good people of Baltimore can keep their community intact," says New Jersey State Police Superintendent Col. Rick Fuentes.
Col. Fuentes says the troopers will be working closely with the Baltimore Police Department. He says the troopers have been equipped to address any situation in Baltimore.
At least 20 Baltimore police officers were hurt and at least 200 people were arrested during Monday night's unrest. A curfew has been placed on the city for Tuesday night from 10 p.m. until 5 a.m.
